Germany will buy up to 35 U.S.-made F-35. The fighters will take over by 2030 the niche, but crucial, nuclear-weapons mission from the aging fleet of Tornado aircraft. The decision means Germany will continue to provide suitable aircraft for carrying U.S. nuclear weapons stored in the country into a hypothetical atomic battle, as prescribed under NATO doctrine.
